Teoxane-Supported Landmark Publication Reinforces The Role Of Science And Education In Aesthetic Medicine

International expert review published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – Global Open1 challenges persistent myths surrounding hyaluronic acid injectable gels

Geneva, Switzerland – October 2026

Teoxane today highlights the publication of “Debunking myths on hyaluronic acid injectable gels in clinical practice” in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – Global open (PRS Global Open), a leading peer-reviewed journal in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Bringing together eight internationally recognized experts in aesthetic medicine, the publication provides a comprehensive review of the available scientific evidence surrounding hyaluronic acid (HA) injectable gels and addresses some of the most common misconceptions circulating among healthcare professionals, patients, and the broader public.

As discussions around aesthetic treatments increasingly take place on social media and digital platforms, misconceptions regarding HA injectable gels have become widespread. The review examines commonly debated topics, including product longevity, reversibility, toxicity, migration, and overfilling, and evaluates these claims against the current body of scientific evidence.

Key Findings from the review

This narrative non-systematic review provides a comprehensive assessment of current scientific evidence and complemented by clinical experience and expert opinion offers a clear, evidence-based perspective on several commonly debated topics in aesthetic medicine. Its key findings include :

HA injectable gels are biodegradable and temporary, with clinical effects typically lasting between 4 and 18 months, depending on the product used, injection technique, treatment area, and patient-specific factors.

  • HA fillers are reversible, as hyaluronidase can be used to dissolve the product when clinically required, making them one of the most versatile and adaptable treatment options in aesthetic medicine.
  • Current HA fillers cross-linked with 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE) are present at concentrations below the threshold associated with toxicity, as supported by analytical/chemistry data, and toxicity is not seen at clinically used doses, as confirmed by a long-standing favorable safety profile
  • The available published evidence does not support the phenomenon of filler migration (gel located remote from the injection site) as an inherent characteristic of HA gels. Filler migration is most commonly associated with improper injection technique and poor anatomical knowledge.
  • Facial overfilled syndrome - commonly referred to as "pillow face"- is not a product-related phenomenon, but rather a consequence of improper injection technique, product choice and patient assessment. An ATP structured approach helps minimize risks of overfilling, while prioritizing natural-looking results.
  • The available evidence suggests that HA injectable treatments may offer benefits beyond volume restoration, such as bio-stimulatory effects and positive impacts on patient quality of life including psychological well-being and self-perception.
  • Education, anatomical expertise, and evidence-based treatment planning remain critical to ensuring safe, effective, and natural-looking patient outcomes.

Advancing aesthetic medicine through science and education

As a science-driven company, Teoxane is committed to fostering education, promoting rigorous scientific exchange, and supporting initiatives that help healthcare professionals make informed decisions based on robust evidence.

By bringing together leading experts from Europe, North America, and Asia to review and challenge commonly held assumptions, this publication contributes to a more informed and balanced understanding of hyaluronic acid injectable treatments and encourages a culture of critical thinking within the aesthetic medical community.

“HA gels are the most widely used injectables in non-surgical facial rejuvenation, and the conversation around them now extends well beyond the clinic. Misconceptions circulate widely, among healthcare professionals as much as among the people we treat, and patients ask legitimate questions that deserve answers grounded in data. That is what this publication provides: a review of the published literature, with the evidence graded where available, on how HA gels degrade and how long the clinical effect lasts, their reversibility with hyaluronidase, the safety of BDDE cross-linking, and what actually determines the outcome, which is anatomical knowledge, careful patient assessment, and the choice of product and technique for the result intended. Taken together, it gives us a shared reference for medical education and for the discussion between practitioner and patient, which is where natural, individualised results come from.”
